The priesthood of all believers is a Protestant doctrine founded on the First Epistle of Peter, 2:9:

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are a kingdom of priests, God's holy nation, his very own possession. This is so you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. (NLT)

Several ideas of Protestant theology begin from this text. It is used to show that the Christian faithful are a chosen people in a similar sense that the descendants of Abraham were a chosen people, called by God for His special purpose.
