A presbytery can be
- the residence of one or more presbyters, priests, or religious elders;
- an area of a church or cathedral reserved for priests;
- the collective college of priests in a diocese, archdiocese, or prelature;
- the local unit in the polity of a Presbyterian church, consisting of presbyters (i.e. elders and ministers) of several local congregations; several presbyteries may then form a synod (see Presbyterian church governance).

Plaintiffs' attorneys have requested that a new judge be appointed to decide which L.A. Archdiocese personnel documents will be released to the public. A year-old legal agreement requiring the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles to release confidential personnel records of priests accused of sexual abuse has been thrown into limbo by the departure of a retired judge selected to vet the documents.
