The Shakers, an offshoot of the Religious Society of Friends (or Quakers), originated in Manchester, England in the late eighteenth century (1772). Strict believers in celibacy, Shakers maintained their numbers through conversion and adoption. Once boasting thousands of adherents, today the Shakers number less than a handful of people living in Sabbathday Lake, Maine.
The Shakers of New England should not be confused with the religion of the Indian Shakers of the Pacific Northwest of North America.
