Civitan International is an association of community service clubs founded in Birmingham, Alabama (where it is still headquartered) in 1917 by Courtney W. Shropshire, a local doctor. The organization aims "to build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities." The organization includes about 30,000 members in almost 1,000 clubs in 23 countries.
The organization helps people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities (MR/DD) through programs like the Civitan Candy Box Project and the Civitan International Research Center, which conducts research into the causes of MR/DD and provides assistance for those affected.
