Disarmament means the reduction or elimination by a nation of its weapons systems. The concept of disarmament is an ideal based on the view that weapons cause wars, and that the elimination of weapons will in itself remove the main causes of conflict. Many people also believe that by disarming, individual nations will no longer perceive arms as necessary for their security. The act of disarmament is seen as creating a new situation in which the potential for international conflict is eliminated.
