Road-traffic safety aims to reduce the harm (deaths, injuries, and property damage) resulting from crashes of road vehicles traveling on public roads. Harm from road-traffic crashes is greater than that from all other transportation modes (air, sea, space, off-terrain, etc.) combined.

Road-traffic crashes are one of the world’s largest public health problems. The problem is all the more acute because the victims are overwhelmingly young and healthy prior to their crashes. More than a million people are killed on the world’s roads each year more than 40,000 on the roads of the United States[http://www-fars.nhtsa.dot.gov/. Since the coming of the automobile in the early days of the twentieth century, more than three million Americans have been killed in road-traffic crashes , vastly more than the 650,000 American battle deaths in all wars, from the start of the revolutionary war in 1775 through the war in Iraq.

Definition of road–traffic crash

Because most of the world’s billion drivers have opinions about this subject, it is imperative to separate what scientific investigation has discovered from the rich mix of available material. A clear understanding requires defining what we are talking about.
