This article is about the ancient city-state of Carthage (Arabic: قرطاج also قرطاجة ) in North Africa. For other uses of the word, see Carthage (disambiguation).

The term Carthage refers both to an ancient city in North Africa — located on the eastern side of Lake Tunis across from the center of modern Tunis in Tunisia — and to the civilization which developed within the city's sphere of influence, in much the same way "Rome" can refer to the city or the ancient civilization.
