A student organization is a voluntary association of students at institutions of secondary and higher education for a specific legal purpose. Such organizations are often sponsored through and receive funding from a student government.
Student organizations can often be categorized as follows:
- Student Activist
- Students' union
- Community Service
- Cultural
- Departmental / Academic
- Fraternities and Sororities
- Honorary
- Military
- Political (e.g. College Republicans, College Democrats)
- Publications
- Recreational
- Religious
- Special Interest
- Spirit
Student organizations often help students identify with and relate to the university they attend, and so they greatly improve student retention rates.
